Around the first of this year, I received an invitation to join a new site with a different approach to reporting and disseminating the news - a community organization called Newsvine. I was pleased and somewhat honored. I am still honored, but much less pleased.
Today, in the top news, are two posts discussing the various problems and shortcomings of this site. Several respondents had the right idea - BETA SITE. That is what it is and what it will be for the longer term. The daily rants and comparisons with other sites are becoming tiresome and in many instances, without merit.
If you are going to be a participatory member, I would like to suggest that your comments are designed to be more like implementable suggestions - it is always easy to tear something down - but requires fifty times the effort to build and build correctly. The founders of Newsvine have EVERY SINGLE REASON to be justifiably proud of their accomplishment(s). They are responsible and responsive. I have gotten replies to email within 5 minutes from the founders - they have a real interest in building a terrific site.
My second criticism is aimed, all 110 percent, at those members who cannot seem to keep a civil tongue. More and more posts and comments are now appearing with any and all sorts of off color words and remarks. Are these really necessary? I guess so if the use of certain words is the only manner by which some people can express themselves. I am sorry that they were brought up in an environment that so limited their capability to form a coherent and persuasive argument. Or, more than likely, that environment just suffered from a complete and total lack of class.
Finally, in just a few weeks, the entire world will be able to view posts and comments. For many, the use of a site alias is the only thing that will save them from public embarrassment. Besides thinking about what point you are trying to get across and who you are trying to influence, think about the way your are presenting your ideas. The English grammar, logic, and word choice is, in many instances, deplorable and at 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels. What bothers me the most is not more than 30 days ago almost everything posted, if you agreed with the poster or not, was at least readable and understandable. There should be no reason for mis-spelled words; a spell checker is found at the bottom of every post creation page.
Let's show a little thoughtfulness. As community members we can demand and expect:
*Well organized and thought provoking posts.
*Comments that demonstrate literacy, education, and good taste.
*Participation that improves the Newsvine and community.
*Encouragement and support of members who show class and integrity in their decision to comment and post.
*Consideration to amend the Code of Honor to eliminate offensive words from all comments and posts, especially when there is an alternative way of communicating the same thing. (crying censorship is a disingenuous argument)
Absolute perfection is not required or even necessarily wanted. This post probably has many, many errors.
I am sure others have more and different ideas. Agree or disagree, post them and let's make Newsvine an endeavor we can all enjoy and be proud of our association.
